Lip Dub of Clouds

Here is a really sad lip dub that SoulPancake put together. The people who did it were celebrities and his friends.  Zach wrote this song to say goodbye to the world and all the people.  Clouds is the song he wrote.  Clouds is #1 on the iTunes list in the US and in Canada it is #2.  I find the song really sad, and the inspiration for him to write it is also really sad.  When I should this song to my mom, we both cried.

I hope you enjoy:

Tech Times Article

Each week, people from our class are writing in the tech times paper that is given out to all teachers in our district.  This week 1 of my friends and I wrote one on using iPads in the class.  Here is is.
I think it is the 5th page.

Felting with Maggie

Today, we got the chance to work with Owen, a teacher in our school's Mom.  Her name is Maggie.  Maggie is a really good fiber artist. We made some things to go in our exhibit at the living museum.  My group is in the process of making a pyramid to sew together because we are studying Ancient Egypt.  We each made a side of the pyramid.   For felting, their are many steps.  You need to lay out you felt, then add water and rub and press on for a long time.  Then you squeeze it again and again  then rinse and dry. It takes a while to make felt, but it's worth it in the end because you have this really cool master piece.   Here is Maggie's site that showcases all of her pieces of art: maggieglossop.com.

Scotiabank Commercial

Here is a really cute Scotiabank commercial that I saw yesterday on TV.  The baby's expression is priceless

Living Museum

My class and Owen's class are working together to create a living museum.  In the living museum, there are going to be many exhibits show casing many things from the medieval and ancient civilizations' time period.  My group is comparing ancient Greece and Egypt on their inventions and technology.

School of Rock

Each year our school does this big rock concert.  This year our concert is going to be at our school, Churchill Alternative. This year we are going to be playing some really awesome songs by bands/artist such as; Walk off the Earth, Chris Hadfield and Ed Robertson, Great big sea, and many more rockin' songs.  If you want to see us perform and you are in Ottawa close to Westbro, you can come on down to Churchill next Friday to watch the show.

Adopt a Helmet

Here is a video we watched in class. We wanted to understand the text more, so we decided to do a thing called text busting.  When we do text busting, there are tons of different sections that we try do fill in. Some of the sections are:
-form
-text
-summary
-Big idea
-support for big idea (at least 3)
-audience
-and many more

Try and text bust this video if you really want to get the message from it.

Really Tricky Question

Here is a really tricky question that my mom and I are trying to find the answer, but still can't.  If you find the answer, please comment!!  I will be shocked if anyone does find the answer, because it is a really tricky question.
Here is the question:

Why is fruit not countable as fruits? You would say a lot of fruit.  But why can we say fruits and vegetables?

English is a Tricky Language

I got this email from my grandma, and now that I think about it, English is indeed a tricky language.  I looked up the word up and it took up 61 lines .
Here is what the email said:

" Homographs are words of like spelling but with more than one meaning. A homograph that is also pronounced differently is a heteronym.
You think English is easy??
I think a retired English teacher was bored...THIS IS GREAT!

Read all the way to the end.................
This took a lot of work to put together!

1) The bandage was wound around the wound.
2) The farm was used to produce produce.

3) The dump was so full that it had to refuse more refuse.
4) We must polish the Polish furniture..

5) He could lead if he would get the lead out.

6) The soldier decided to desert his dessert in the desert..
7) Since there is no time like the present, he thought it was time to present the present.
8) A bass was painted on the head of the bass drum.

9) When shot at, the dove dove into the bushes.

10) I did not object to the object.
11) The insurance was invalid for the invalid.
12) There was a row among the oarsmen about how to row.

13) They were too close to the door to close it.

14) The buck does funny things when the does are present.
15) A seamstress and a sewer fell down into a sewer line.

16) To help with planting, the farmer taught his sow to sow.
17) The wind was too strong to wind the sail.

18) Upon seeing the tear in the painting I shed a tear..
19) I had to subject the subject to a series of tests.

20) How can I intimate this to my most intimate friend?

Let's face it - English is a crazy language. There is no egg in eggplant, nor ham in hamburger; neither apple nor pine in pineapple. English muffins weren't invented in England or French fries in France. Sweetmeats are candies while sweetbreads, which aren't sweet, are meat. We take English for granted. But if we explore its paradoxes, we find that quicksand can work slowly, boxing rings are square and a guinea pig is neither from Guinea nor is it a pig.

And why is it that writers write but fingers don't fing, grocers don't groce and hammers don't ham? If the plural of tooth is teeth, why isn't the plural of booth, beeth? One goose, 2 geese. So one moose, 2 meese? One index, 2 indices? Doesn't it seem crazy that you can make amends but not one amend? If you have a bunch of odds and ends and get rid of all but one of them, what do you call it?

If teachers taught, why didn't preachers praught? If a vegetarian eats vegetables, what does a humanitarian eat? Sometimes I think all the English speakers should be committed to an asylum for the verbally insane. In what language do people recite at a play and play at a recital? Ship by truck and send cargo by ship? Have noses that run and feet that smell?
How can a slim chance and a fat chance be the same, while a wise man and a wise guy are opposites? You have to marvel at the unique lunacy of a language in which your house can burn up as it burns down, in which you fill in a form by filling it out and in which, an alarm goes off by going on.

English was invented by people, not computers, and it reflects the creativity of the human race, which, of course, is not a race at all. That is why, when the stars are out, they are visible, but when the lights are out, they are invisible.

PS. - Why doesn't 'Buick' rhyme with 'quick'?

You lovers of the English language might enjoy this.

There is a two-letter word that perhaps has more meanings than any other two-letter word, and that is
'UP.'
It's easy to understand
UP, meaning toward the sky or at the top of the list, but when we awaken in the morning, why do we wake UP?
At a meeting, why does a topic come UP?
Why do we speak UP and why are the officers UP for election and why is it UP to the secretary to write UP a report?
We call UP our friends.
And we use it to brighten UP a room, polish UP the silver; we warm UP the leftovers and clean UP the kitchen.
We lock UP the house and some guys fix UP the old car.
At other times the little word has real special meaning.
People stir UP trouble, line UP for tickets, work UP an appetite, and think UP excuses.
To be dressed is one thing, but to be dressed UP is special.
A drain must be opened UP because it is stopped UP.
We open UP a store in the morning but we close it UP at night.
We seem to be pretty mixed
UP about UP!
To be knowledgeable about the proper uses of UP, look the word UP in the dictionary.
In a desk-sized dictionary, it takes UP almost 1/4th of the page and can add UP to about thirty definitions.
If you are UP to it, you might try building UP a list of the many ways UP is used.
It will take UP a lot of your time, but if you don't give UP, you may wind UP with a hundred or more.
When it threatens to rain, we say it is clouding UP.
When the sun comes out we say it is clearing UP.When it rains, it wets the earth and often messes things UP.When it doesn't rain for awhile, things dry UP.
One could go on and on, but I'll wrap it UP,for now my time is UP. "

It's a pretty long language, but it explains why English is a tricky language.
Do you think English is an easy language?

Science--Forces on Structures

Today, we had a little workshop type thing on forces on structures.  We learned a lot from this workshop thing. In the workshop we built bridges to see which bridge could hold the most weight (in books).  I found it was really cool being able to work with a bunch of other students to make a bridge.  Our bridge had many triangles which support the weight really well.  We learned some of the forces on structures.  On of the ways the presenter told us that if you were to step on a nail would it be better to step on one or on 100.  What do you think?  It would be better to step on 100 because you have more support and it is balanced easier.

"Girls" and "Boys" Toys and Cloths

What is the first thing that you think of when you think pink? Usually you would think girls over boys, right?  Well, that isn't necessarily true.  I know many boys that like pink, and I know many girls that actually hate pink.  Lots of people think just because it is a certain colour or shape our label, they mean that it is just for one gender, they can be for many genders. On many toys there are labels like BOYS and GIRLS, but nothing is only for girls or boys, that is why I put girls and boys in the title in quotation marks.  A while ago I saw an add in a newspaper/magazine and it was advertising   telescopes.  There was a pink one, a silver one, and a blue one.  Guess which one had less power, medium power, and excellent power? The pink one had less power than them all, and the silver had most and the blue had medium.  Technically the message we are sending out to the world is that girls can't be the same job as boys, they are saying that boys have all these "manly" jobs and in other magazines they put girls with kitchens and vacuums , but do girls have to do  only certain jobs that involve cleaning, NO, not at all.  Girls and Boys can do what ever they want to do, they don't have to follow all those magazines and newspapers.  So remember that when you grow up, you can do what ever you want it doesn't matter what gender you are.

Music Monday

Today, Monday, May 6th, 2013 is music Monday.  For music Monday,  Chris Hadfield from space sang at 12 o'clock with anybody who wanted to sing along with him.  It was pretty amazing felling to know that when you were singing there are many other kids and adults singing along to the song that you are singing.  If you wanted to, you could chat with Chris Hadfield, sadly, our school was not able to chat with him but at least we got the chance to sing at the same time as he did.

If you want, you can check him out on twitter and follow him on his adventures in space.  He will post pictures of what space looks like from up there; he will tell you what it is like to be up there in space; and he will tell you many more things about space.
